This gritty drama from director Kathryn Bigelow tells the true story of a fatal police confrontation at a Detroit motel. It's 1967, and the city is a powder keg of racial unrest. Against a backdrop of urban race riots, the Detroit police lay siege to the Algiers Motel. The raid results in the deaths of three black men and the beatings of nine other people, including two white women. Bigelow's visceral film puts you inside an incredibly disturbing misuse of police power then pulls back and explores the investigation and trial that follow. Brutal and unflinching, this portrait of racial injustice and authoritarian police is a chilling look at a very dark period in American history.
