Mel Gibson directs this biographical war drama that combines extreme violence with spirituality. Based on true events, Hacksaw Ridge tells the tale of Desmond T. Doss, who won the Medal of Honor for exceptional service as an army medic. Doss is a Seventh-day Adventist and doesn't believe in violence, but he still enlists in the army. Much to the disgust of the men in his unit, Doss refuses to pick up a weapon. Even though they call him a coward, he won't fire a gun. Even when the fighting get thick during the Battle of Okinawa, Doss sticks to his principles, acting as a medic and healing instead of killing. A meditation on the true meaning of courage, Hacksaw Ridge is a thoughtful, intense war movie.
