This lyrical drama tells the story of a poor black kid growing up in Miami during the War on Drugs. Broken up in three chapters, we see the main character, Chiron, come of age against a backdrop of poverty and crime. But Moonlight avoids the familiar movie tropes of drug abuse and urban strife in favor of telling a complex, personal story. As a young man, Chiron's home has been wrecked by his mother's crack use. He finds solace and a surrogate father within the tranquil home of the local drug dealer. Bullied and nicknamed "Little," Chiron must reach some peace with his homosexuality within a culture that is often hostile to it. Critically acclaimed, Moonlight is destined to be a classic.
